Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a program to chat with people using different chat programs. That is, while you talk with people who use Windows Live Messenger, ICQ, Yahoo! IM client Jabber, Google Talk, etc..

As for their functions, Pidgin allows sending files, has a reminder of "your friend is typing ..." emoticons, notifications, different states and is able to run a program or change state depending on whether one of your contacts connects.
